Oceanside READS is Oceanside Public Library’s literacy services program. It offers free, confidential, one-on-one tutoring to English-speaking adults and youth in the Oceanside community.

ADULT LITERACY
Do you know someone who has a desire to learn to read, or read better? Share the Oceanside READS telephone number!
To become an Oceanside READS learner you must:
- Be 18 years of age or an out-of-school youth
- Be able to speak English
- Schedule an assessment with a staff member to determine your tutoring needs
- Meet with your tutor for a minimum of 2 days a week, 90 minutes each time

Call the Oceanside READS literacy tutoring program to learn how you can become an adult literacy volunteer, helping others gain the reading skills needed in today’s world … and learn to love reading as you do.
Requirements for tutoring adults:
- Be 18 years of age or older
- Possess a high school diploma or equivalent
- Complete a free training session
- Commit to tutoring an adult learner for at least 6 months
- Tutor for a minimum of 2 days a week, 90 minutes each session, at times that are convenient for you (evening and weekend hours available)
The main tutoring facility is the Oceanside READS Learning Center. Enter through the Community Computer Center at 321 N. Nevada Street.
An additional tutoring site is located inside the Mission Branch Library at 3861 Mission Avenue.
Literacy books and materials are available at both sites. The Learning Center also provides access to computer software for independent use by literacy learners, including Omti-Rogers phonics program, Spell It Deluxe, and typing/keyboard programs.
YOUTH LITERACY
Oceanside READS works cooperatively with the Oceanside Unified School District to assist children in grades 1 – 12 who are below grade level in reading, writing, spelling and grammar. Tutors work with each child on an individual basis to improve the child’s skills.
Requirements for tutoring youth:
- Be 14 years of age (if still in high school, must have a B average or better)
- Complete a free training session
- Commit to tutoring a youth student for at least 6 months
- Tutor for a minimum of 2 days a week, 60 minutes each session at times that are convenient for you (evening and weekend hours are available).
