How do I access the library’s Wi-Fi network?
Oceanside Public Library provides open access to the Wi-Fi network at the Civic Center and Mission Branch libraries. You do not need any type of ID or password. Simply turn on your laptop or PDA to access the Internet.

What are the hours of operation for the Wi-Fi network?
The Wi-Fi connection will be up at both locations whenever the library is open.

Are there any restrictions on how many hours I may access the Wi-Fi network?
No. You may use the library’s Wi-Fi network for as many hours as you wish.

Are there a maximum number of simultaneous users?
No. Please note that the speed of the connection will vary depending upon how many users are on the network at any given time. The speed will be faster at times when there are fewer users.

Can Wi-Fi users connect to the library printers?
No. If you wish to print something from your laptop, you will need to save the data to a disk or other storage device, or e-mail it to your own web-based account, and print it from a library computer connected to a printer.

What set-up standard is the library using?
Your laptop must conform to the 802.11 standard, commonly known as the Wi-Fi standard. 802.11 a/b/g will be covered. Older laptops with a PCMCIA slot or USB port can be fitted with a special wireless network interface card (Ethernet NIC) to access the Wi-Fi network.

Where are the hotspots located within the library?
Coverage at the downtown location includes both floors and the community room. The entire Mission Branch Library and community room are covered for Wi-Fi access.

Will I have to use my own power source for my laptop?
No. There are electrical outlets marked with a round, red Wi-Fi label at both locations. Please use only the marked outlets and do not unplug anything from any outlet to plug in your laptop. If you cannot locate an outlet marked for Wi-Fi access, please ask a library staff member for assistance.

Are there any rules regarding what Web sites I may access?
Yes. Wi-Fi users need to adhere to the library’s Computer Use and Internet Access Policy. If a staff member sees a patron violating the policy, that patron may have their computer privileges revoked.

Does the library limit my personal use of the Internet?
Yes. SurfControl filtering software automatically blocks most inappropriate Web sites in accordance with the library’s computer use policy.

Will library staff be able to assist me with connection problems?
No. Library staff can check to make sure the Wi-Fi connection is up, but they cannot help patrons with their own equipment. If you are having problems connecting via the Wi-Fi network, you will need to check with your user manual, the manufacturer, or the retail outlet where you purchased the laptop or PDA for assistance.

May I use the Wi-Fi network for Internet phone calls?
No. Telephone calls made on computers and cell phones are distracting to others. Please do not make calls inside the library.

Is the Wi-Fi network safe and secure?
No. Wi-Fi users assume all risks and responsibilities associated with using the library’s hotspots. Patrons should take appropriate precautions when using this service. The library is not liable for any consequences of wireless network access, including loss of information, transmission of computer viruses, or the interception of sensitive data.
